A written prescription for morphine SR 30 mg, #120, reads 'dispense 30 tablets every 7 days'. The patient asks for 'refills' next month. Which statement is correct?
Narcotic prescriptions cannot be refilled; a new prescription is needed for more drug. However, the prescriber can direct that the total quantity be dispensed in parts at specified intervals (part-fills), which pharmacists can follow. Once the 120 tablets have been dispensed, the prescription is complete. Provincial rules may add further requirements. Source: Narcotic Control Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1041), s. 31(2) (a narcotic may be sold only on a written order or prescription; the regulations contain no refill authority) (laws-lois.justice.gc.ca, checked 13 Oct 2026); NAPRA Model Standards of Practice (2022).
